Supporting Our Veterans

Kara is deeply committed to our Veteran community and those serving in the armed forces.
Most recently, Kara supported legislation to guarantee Connecticut veterans only have to pay the “in-state” tuition rate at state colleges and universities – recognizing that residency is more complicated for those who serve.
In addition, Kara worked to establish a new local-option tax exemption for veterans and created new license plates for those who served in Iraq or Afghanistan.
These efforts build on Kara’s work in prior years, which included:
  • Extending certain state war service benefits, like property tax exemptions and tuition waivers, to veterans who served less than 90 days in a period of war because they incurred or aggravated an injury in the line of duty.
  • Co-sponsoring the Military to Machinists Program to provides assistance to veterans hoping to earn an advanced manufacturing certificate from public institutions of higher learning.
  • Encouraging Veteran Educators, Kara co-sponsored a bill which reserves 10% of available seats for veterans in certain alternate route to certification programs.
