Consumer Protection & Privacy

Kara is a fierce advocate for consumer protection, data privacy, and putting people before profits. In a 21st century filled with ever-evolving algorithms and artificial intelligence, Kara has dedicated herself to ensuring residents and consumers are protected. As a member of the legislature's AI Caucus, Kara believes a technologically advanced society does not need to come at the expense of your privacy or wellbeing.

Kara has delivered on:

• Banning surveillance pricing, where your personal data was being used to maximize corporate profits and price gouge, often without your knowledge, by tech giants like Amazon 
• Passing toughest-in-the-nation regulation cracking down on Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPR's), like Flock, prohibiting the sale of data, strongly limiting who has access, requiring additional security protections, and allowing legal action if information is misused. Kara looks forward to enacting additional bans and restrictions in the coming session, as she strongly feels more needs to be done around this issue
• Passing restrictions and protections against facial recognition technology & banning the sale of geolocation data
• Establishing a One-Click-Delete law, creating a state-run page where you can request all of your data be deleted from all data brokers with one click on the centralized site.  The law also fines the data broker sites if they do not comply, keeping your data safe
• Banning the sale of consumer data from being sold without expressed consent from the consumer
• Creating a state registry of insurance agents that were fired for cause
• Ensuring CT banks and credit unions have safety measures in place to protect our data and establishing improved communication protocol with the state when there is a breach
• Making banks apply mortgage overpayments to the principal instead of prepaying interest
• Requiring honest and transparent advertising of car prices by requiring the all-in price of the car, including conveyance fees, as well as banning car dealers from sharing your data with car manufacturers 
• Requiring a non-discrimination policy with ride services like Uber and Lyft so that those with service animals are not turned away
